Member, Madras Legislative Assembly (1939), 1st KLA [Nileshwar-CPI], 2nd KLA [Pattambi-CPI], 3rd KLA [Pattambi –CPI(M)], 4th KLA [Pattambi-CPI(M)], 5th KLA [Alathur-CPI(M)].

Chief Minister from 05-4-1957 to 31-7-1959 and from 06-3-1967 to 01-11-1969; Opposition Leader, 2nd KLA from 1960 to 1964, 3rd KLA from 1969 to 1970, 4th KLA from 1970 to 1977, 5th KLA from 1977 to 1978; Chairman, Committee on Privileges (1957-59) and (1967-69); Entered politics through Congress; State Congress Secretary in 1934 and during 1938-1939; Communist Leader since 1939; Member, Polit Bureau from 1950; General Secretary, CPI (1962-63) and later CPI(M); Apart from his autobiography “How I became a Communist” he has authored several books. “The Mahatma and the ism”, “Kerala yesterday today and tomorrow” to name only a few.
